Scam Warning – Beware Of Fake BBB Emails Businesses and consumers across the country are being hit by an ongoing email scam that appears to be from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The fake emails started late last year and have gone through a number of variations since then.
In one, people report receiving phone calls—in addition to emails—from scammers claiming to be from the BBB. These callers offer help to remove a virus from the recipient's computer. They claim the computer was infected when the owner downloaded a virus from an email scam using the BBB name. The BBB is cautioning not to give out any personal information to callers or to install or download any software they recommend. Should you receive a suspicious email identified as being from the BBB, don't click on any links or open any attachments; doing so could unleash a virus. You can test the links by using your mouse to hover over them. The destination of the links will appear in a small pop-up box next to the link or at the bottom of the screen. If the email is a scam, the website shown will not be a BBB.org URL. After you've confirmed the email you received is a scam, the BBB has asked that you forward it to phishing@council.bbb.org and delete it from your inbox. Also, make sure your virus software is up to date and run a virus scan. Save Up To $90/Mo. With Available Family Plans Each year residents and surrounding communities are encouraged to participate in the annual E-Cycle Event. This event was first held in 2009 and has continued with a great success. In 2011, over 200 vehicles came through, collecting 27,334 lbs of recyclable electronics and completely filling two semi trailers.
This event focuses on properly disposing electronic items in an environmentally safe manner by Midwest Electronic Recovery. It is estimated that 40% of lead found in landfills is from e-waste. Various items are accepted, such as: computers, laptops, cell phones, stereos, Ipods/mp3 players, televisions, VCR/DVD players, video game systems, electric mixers, coffee makers, nail guns, drills, and much more. You can view a complete list of acceptable items here. Please note: appliances (microwaves, dishwashers, fridges, washer/dryer, dehumidifiers and other large applicances) are NOT accepted. This year's event will be held at Pella's south loading docks on April 21, 2012, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. If trucks are full, doors will close before 12:00 pm. (whichever comes first). There is no charge for this service; however, donations are greatly appreciated. This E-Cycle Event is sponsored by these environmentally conscious companies: City of Sioux Center, Interstates, and Pella Corporation.
